Because of its short length, many people think of baseball as a summer sport—but it’s important to remember that unlike many other sports leagues, MLB has a hard and fast start date rather than kicking off whenever spring arrives.
While Major League Baseball schedules a 162-game regular season, how many games are actually played during that time? Believe it or not, some of them are rained out! Major League Baseball plays about 140 games during each regular season. That’s because all teams get scheduled for three days off. Some of those days can be made up at other points in the season or added to a team’s preseason schedule (if they are participating), but every team is guaranteed three days off per season…usually on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
